VHA National Center for Patient Safety – Teams Training

Problem

VHA National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) developed a very sophisticated multi-disciplinary educational program designed to create high functioning clinical teams across 167 medical centers and 1100 outpatient clinics. The training met significant resistance and experienced inconsistent quality.

Solution

Authored an Implementation Guide to communicate value, standardize roles and responsibilities, provide a phased implementation approach, and remove administrative burdens. Equipped instructors with 6 hours of video content and three instructor manuals to ensure consistent quality.

Outcome

Supported the development of a cadre of over 1500 master trainers who have trained over 300 clinical units responsible for implementing 250 Unit Based Safety Projects designed to hardwire improvement and address risks in direct care settings.
