VHA Nurse Standards and Qualifications Modernization

Problem

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has a large, diverse and geographically dispersed nursing workforce and needed a comprehensive plan to modernize the outdated nurse qualification standards and performance management processes.

Solution

Combined change management, communications and training expertise, focusing on issues important to the largest workforce segment within VHA. Provided support to raise awareness and understanding the changes, thus facilitating stakeholder buy-in and adoption.

Outcome

Implemented new nurse qualification standards and processes for approximately 100,000 Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Nurses across VHA. Local Nursing Boards were eliminated, and professional activities were streamlined allowing VHA to compete and retain the best talent.
